March 14: The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs (FNNTE) has asked the government to adjust the public transportation fare in the wake of the price hike of petroleum products.

Organising a press conference on Sunday, the federation urged the government to adjust the fare at the earliest while expressing concern over the government's apathy despite skyrocketing price of fuel.

The federation's representatives argued that they will be forced to increase the fare themselves if the government does not review the fare.

The federation's Chairman Yogendra Nath Karmacharya said they would adjust the fare on the basis of scientific fare procedure if the existing rate is not reviewed by March 21. He said the transportation fare has not been adjusted even once although the price of the petroleum products has been hiked seven times since July 2021. FNNTE informed that the fare of public transport has not been revised since October 13, 2021. Back then, the price of diesel was Rs 104 per liter, but now the price has jumped to Rs 133 per liter, the transport entrepreneurs said.

The transport entrepreneurs said that scientific fare adjustment is needed at the moment when the price of every commodity is increasing in the market. The federation expressed displeasure stating that the government turned a deaf ear to their pleas.

Earlier, a delegation of the Federation of Truck Transport Entrepreneurs, Nepal (FTTEN) had separately met the Director General of Department of Transport Management, Namaraj Ghimire seeking the government initiatives to resolve problems existing in the transportation sector.  During the meeting, the delegation submitted a memorandum to Director General Ghimire demanding the adjustment of transport fare to keep up with the increased price of petroleum products
