February 24: Russian forces invaded Ukraine on Thursday in a massed assault by land, sea and air, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War Two, Reuters reported.

According to the news agency, missiles rained down on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine reported columns of troops pouring across its borders from Russia and Belarus, and landing on the coast from the Black and Azov seas.

The BBC also confirmed that Russian forces invaded Ukraine, with missile strikes and explosions reported near major cities and on its military infrastructure.

The Ukrainian military reported said it has killed about 50 Russian "occupiers" and shot down at least six Russian aircraft.

Russia on the other hand maintained that it met little resistance and claimed that Ukrainian armed forces fled en masse, abandoning their weapons and positions, BBC further reported.

According to BBC, emergency sirens have been sounding in Kyiv since the first explosions in the early hours while huge traffic jams have built up as residents tried to flee the city after Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian flights.
