December 30: With the risk of Covid-19 subsiding, the number of foreign tourists visiting the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square, which is listed in the World Heritage Site, has started increasing. The Hanumandhoka Durbar Square was opened for foreign tourists in July after the risk of coronavirus infection started declining.     

A total of 49 tourists, including 11 from South Asian countries and 38 from other countries, visited the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square in July. Sundarkaji Thuyaju, an official of Hanumandhoka Durbar Square Conservation Program under the Kathmandu Metropolitan, informed that 101 tourists including 30 from South Asian countries and 71 from other countries visited the heritage site in August. 

Likewise, in October, the number of foreign tourists visiting the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square skyrocketed. A total of 621 tourists, including 149 from South Asian countries and 472 from other countries, visited the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square in October. The number of foreign tourists in the Durbar Square increased three times in November compared to October. 

A total of 2,103 foreign tourists, including 585 from South Asian countries and 1,518 from other countries, visited the area in mid-November. 

The number of tourists declined in mid-December due to the spread of a new variant of coronavirus, Omicron. A total of 1,873 tourists, including 653 from South Asian countries and 1,220 from other countries, visited the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square in mid-December.  

Thuyaju informed that Rs 150 is charged for citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC nations while Rs 1,000 is charged for citizens of other countries. 

In the Fiscal Year 2075/2076, the government had collected a revenue of of Rs 187.2 million from tourists visiting the site. Due to the impact of coronavirus, only Rs 1.35 million was collected in  FY 2077/2078.

As of mid-December of the current fiscal year, Rs 3.6 million has been raised. The office has set up six counters at Juddha Statue, Jhonche, Dashavatar temple, Simhasattal, Pyaphal and Makkhan Pashupati temples to issue tickets to foreign tourists.
