November 11: This year’s Chhath festival celebrations have concluded across the country by offering prayers to the rising sun this morning (November 11).
The devotees presented offerings, worshipped the statue of Chhati Mai on the banks of rivers and ponds and lit oil lamps. Likewise, a large number of devotees thronged to pay homage to the idols in different parts of the country including Mithila region where the festival is observed in particular.
This festival is celebrated from the fourth day of bright half of the lunar calendar to the seventh day in the month of Kartik as per the Nepali calendar.  It usually falls in the months of October and November as per the Gregorian calendar.

During this period, the worshipers observe purity, abstain from eating ‘impure’ food and sleep on the floor on a single blanket. This is the only holy festival which has no involvement of any priest.
After offering prayers to the rising Sun, the devotees offer coconut, banana and other sweet dishes to their relatives and neighbours.

The Sun considered as the God of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath festival to promote well-being, prosperity and progress of family members. (With inputs from RSS)
