December 11: Nepal Rastra Bank’s Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari has said that the central bank is committed to the develop digital economy and promote financial system in Nepal.

Governor Adhikari made such remarks during the virtual inauguration of Singapore FinTech Festival on Thursday (December 10). The festival is being organised by the United Nations Capital Development Fund and Singapore Monetary Authority.

Speaking on the topic of digital payment for agriculture, Governor Adhikari said that  Nepal Rastra Bank in capacity of the financial sector regulator has realized its role for the development of digital economy of Nepal.

He revealed that the Government of Nepal has already initiated an ambitious project named Digital Nepal for promoting digital economy in the country.

“This initiative will play a vital role in transforming the economy, administrative system and social activities,” said Governor Adhikari.

Governor Adhikari further informed that the Government of Nepal as well as the central bank have given high priority for electronic transaction and payment system in recent days. He also said that the central bank has made necessary arrangements including legal provisions as well as policy-level decisions to implement the use of digital transaction in the country.

He said that the importance of digital transaction has been clearly visible due to the coronavirus pandemic and also stressed on the need for digital payment in agriculture as well.

He suggested expanding digital payment system from urban areas to rural areas and to connect local farmers with e-commerce system.

Stating that that 28 percent of Nepal’s total GDP and almost two-thirds population are dependent on Agriculture, Governor Adhikari said that traditional farmers must focus on commercial farming. He said that the monetary policy has provision for credit card facilities and bonds for the farmers in order to make them competitive in the commercial market.
