September 16: The unpaid workers and suppliers working for the Melamchi Water Supply Project have ended their protest after the Ministry of Water Supply agreed to pay their overdue amount.

Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna, which unilaterally left the project in last December, was yet to pay the workers and suppliers for their services.

Bishnu Mani Acharya, coordinator of CMC Victims Struggle Committee informed that the protest came to an end following a five-point agreement signed between the   government and the victims on Sunday, September 15.

As per the understanding, the government has agreed to pay the overdue amount to the workers and suppliers of Melamchi Water Supply Project within two months of the agreement. The government has also agreed to provide treatment to the workers injured during the protest and bear their medical expenses.

Deverman Adhikari, one of the victims of CMC di Ravenna, informed New Business Age that the government has agreed to pay the overdue amounts of all the 828 workers and suppliers.  Earlier the government had decided to compensate only 627 workers.

A task-force formed by the government had determined the number of victims and the overdue amounts.

The task-force will submit the report to a government probe committee on September 17.
