May 30: The government has allocated Rs 173 billion to the country’s transportation sector for the upcoming fiscal year 2019/20. Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada made the announcement while unveiling the new budget on Wednesday, May 29.</p>
<p>
The government has allocated Rs 163 billion for the construction of roads, railways and waterways. Likewise, Rs 7.70 billion has been separated for the operation of rail and metro-rail in Kathmandu.</p>
<p>
<strong>Compulsory e-card for bus fare </strong></p>
<p>
The government is arranging electronic card (e-card) for paying bus fare by establishing Transport Authority within the next fiscal year. The new budget has also stressed on public transportation by encouraging big buses and banning the existing transport cartels. Likewise the budget has also emphasized on installing charging stations to promote electric vehicles across the country.</p>
<p>
In order to manage transportation, the government will also be establishing ‘test centers’ in the capitals of all seven provinces of the country. For this, Rs 1.53 billion has been allocated, said Finance Minister Khatiwada.</p>
