Most of the Roads in Nepal yet to be Blacktopped: Report

May 28: Nepal’s road network across the country measures 91,556 kilometers, according to a government report.

However, the length of quality and safe roads is comparatively less than the total length of the road, states the report prepared recently after four years of measurement.

The country currently has 18,048 km of blacktopped roads in operation. The blacktopped  road is just 19.7 percent of the total road network.

According to the economic survey report of 2075/76, the Department of Roads blacktopped 14,102 km of roads while 3,946 km of roads were blacktopped by local and provincial governments.

The Department of Roads has been expanding the national highways and strategic roadways while the provincial and local governments are funding smaller and rural roads since the country adopted federalism.

Although the government authorities claim given proper attention  in constructing quality and safe roads, the survey report indicates a different reality.

The report says that only a small portion of roads constructed in the local levels are blacktopped.  Out of 60,163 km roads constructed in the rural areas, only 3,946 km (6.5 percent)  have been blacktopped until mid-February .

The lack of quality road has resulted in escalation of road accidents and transportation charges, the report further states.
