May 28: Although Nepal in recent years has been witnessing higher number of tourists’ arrival, the length of their stay and spending have been found to be declining.

A total of 1.173 million tourists arrived in the country in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018/19 excluding Indian tourists who arrived through road. This data is 25 percent higher than that of the previous FY 2017/18, when 940,218 tourists had visited the country.

Despite of the increase in arrival of tourists, their stay and spending could not rise accordingly. The Economic Survey of FY 2018/19 unveiled on Monday, May 27, revealed that the average number of days that a tourist stays in Nepal has dropped to 12.4 from 12.6 in the current FY from the previous year. Likewise, the average daily spending of tourists has also dropped down to $44 in FY 2018/19 from $54 in the previous year.

The survey states that Nepal earned foreign currency equivalent to Rs 47.59 billion from the tourism sector till mid-March of the current FY while it earned Rs 67.9 billion in the last FY.  Most of the tourists visiting Nepal this year came from India, China, America, Sri Lanka and Britain.

Altogether 16 .6 percent of the tourists were from India, followed by 13.1 percent from China, 7.8 percent from America, 5.9 percent from Sri Lanka and 5.4 percent from Britain.
