May 10: The earthquake ravaged Tatopani customs point, a vital trade route linking Nepal with northern neighbour China, will reopen from June 20.  China has informed Nepal that it will complete the infrastructure including the friendship bridge by the time and hand over the customs point to Nepal.

Secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Kedar Bahadur Adhikari, informed New Business Age that China has sent a letter to Nepal in this regard.

The main trade route between Nepal and China had remained closed since the earthquake of 2015 devastated the area. Following the destruction, China had press for operating Kerung-Rasuwagadi route for trade with Nepal. However, the Government of Nepal and the locals of Tatopani have been urging China to reopen the Tatopani route because it has all the necessary infrastructures including a two-lane road and is 60 km shorter than the Kerung-Rasuwagadi route.

Considering this, China has agreed to resume the Tatopani route as an international trade point, said the officials of Nepal government.

However, China has shown reluctance to open the Tatopani border the Chinese Army found out about the activities of Tibetan refugees in Nepal during the rescue operation after the catastrophic earthquake. China had been complaining to Nepal about the issue through unofficial channels since then while the government officials of Nepal claimed that they have addressed the concerns of China.

After learning that China was interested in reopening the Tatopani border in 2016, Nepal started reconstruction of the Araniko Highway to connect with Tatopani.

Secretary Adhikari said, “The reconstruction work is about to complete.” He further said that the construction of the friendship bridge has reached the final stage.
