But, working in the group has made it easy. Collective farming has enabled to earn skills and technology for the cultivation,” Bashyal stated. According to him, the 450 kilograms of potatoes was planted in four ropani land for the first time. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">As many as 22 individuals are directly involved in the potato farming. The group could not produce the potato as expected due to lack of irrigation facility this time. “We have produced more than 1100 kilograms of potato. The mill has capacity to crush 20,000 quintals of sugarcane in a day. The mill, however, is crushing the less than 7,000 quintals of the sugarcane on a daily basis. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Sugar Mill Proprietor Baiju Babara complained that sugarcane shortage had put the mill on the verge of closure. <br /> The mill had crushed just 0.6 million quintals of sugarcane last year. “Operating the mill below its capacity has incurred heavy loss for the mill,” said Babara. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Farmers have reduced the cultivation of the sugarcane due to some sugar mills’ failure to pay the farmers on regular basis. Mill proprietor Babara says that his mill has no issue regarding the payment to the sugarcane farmers. “We have been paying the sugarcane farmers at their doorstep and encouraging them. Despite this, the production has declined,” Babara said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Farmers from Bara and Sarlahi used to sell sugarcane to the mill. The government ban to sell sugarcane from one district to another has aggravated the scarcity of the sugarcane, according to Barabara. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Baijanath Sugar Mill has been helping farmers with seed, fertilizer and payment at their place. Besides, the mill has also provided a cane harvester to the farmers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Rautahat used to produce more than 2 million quintals of sugarcane in the past. The sugarcane production stands at between 1 to 1.2 million quintals a year at the moment, according to Sugarcane Producers’ Association Rautahat said. Home to 99,339 hectares of the arable land, the province produces 3,39,909 metric tons of the food in a year, while the province requires 3,58316 metric tons of the food yearly. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The Ministry’s Spokesperson Dhan Bahadur Kathayat said that the ministry had emphasized for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in the uncultivated land. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">“We have devised various plans to utilize unused and barren land. The group is preparing to plant potato in 100 ropani land by expanding the farming to Paireni, and Lamsung as well. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The group has planted 20 muri potato seeds in the rented land of local people. Local farmers are excited to give continuity to the potato farming in the next year as well. Despite this, the production has declined,” Babara said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Farmers from Bara and Sarlahi used to sell sugarcane to the mill. The government ban to sell sugarcane from one district to another has aggravated the scarcity of the sugarcane, according to Barabara. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Baijanath Sugar Mill has been helping farmers with seed, fertilizer and payment at their place. Besides, the mill has also provided a cane harvester to the farmers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Rautahat used to produce more than 2 million quintals of sugarcane in the past. The sugarcane production stands at between 1 to 1.2 million quintals a year at the moment, according to Sugarcane Producers’ Association Rautahat said. Some have left the group, while others have switched their business. “The group has 55 members and all of us are very active,” added Hiramani.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The group’s firm has 500 ducklings. The group is planning to add 500 extra ducklings after the winter season is over. <br /> The Tharu women have also started mushroom farming.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">According to Hiramani, they had faced difficulty in the initial days. Some have left the group, while others have switched their business. “The group has 55 members and all of us are very active,” added Hiramani.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The group’s firm has 500 ducklings. The group is planning to add 500 extra ducklings after the winter season is over. <br /> The Tharu women have also started mushroom farming.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">According to Hiramani, they had faced difficulty in the initial days. Compared to other provinces, both paddy production and paddy cultivation area have decreased in Gandaki Province. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">“Shrinking of paddy plantation field due to rise of houses and housing plots has led to drop in paddy produce,” said Basudev Regmi, Chief of Agriculture Development Directorate of the province. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">“Urbanization and commercialization have increased in the arable land and land going barren have also soared, causing the paddy produce to fall,” added Regmi.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Regmi warned that rising tendency to construct houses in the arable land would make country more dependent on food in the days to come. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Adverse weather, shortage of chemical fertilizer, and substandard seeds have also caused the paddy produce to shrink, Regmi described.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Farmers had experienced fertilizer crunch at the time of paddy cultivation. But, working in the group has made it easy. Collective farming has enabled to earn skills and technology for the cultivation,” Bashyal stated. According to him, the 450 kilograms of potatoes was planted in four ropani land for the first time. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">As many as 22 individuals are directly involved in the potato farming. The group could not produce the potato as expected due to lack of irrigation facility this time. “We have produced more than 1100 kilograms of potato. Despite this, the production has declined,” Babara said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Farmers from Bara and Sarlahi used to sell sugarcane to the mill. The government ban to sell sugarcane from one district to another has aggravated the scarcity of the sugarcane, according to Barabara. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Baijanath Sugar Mill has been helping farmers with seed, fertilizer and payment at their place. Women have kept local chickens, ducks, and fish. They have also grown bananas in the group. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">For commercial agriculture, women have established Tharu Women Farmers’ Group. “We are buying the seeds and fertiliser and selling the produce through the group,” said group’s chairperson Hiramani Guraule. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Initially, the group had 98 members. Some have left the group, while others have switched their business. “The group has 55 members and all of us are very active,” added Hiramani.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The group’s firm has 500 ducklings. The group is planning to add 500 extra ducklings after the winter season is over. <br /> The Tharu women have also started mushroom farming.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">According to Hiramani, they had faced difficulty in the initial days. But, keeping ducks and hens and growing bananas have become easy after receiving training from technicians.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Customers visit the farms to purchase ducks, chickens and fish. “We are failing to meet ducks’ demand as our products are organic”, Hiramani shared.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">The group has invested more than Rs 8 lakhs to construct physical structures for keeping fish, ducks and local chickens. Hiramani says that working in the group has made their work easy and they are making a good income even with small investment. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:18px">Earlier, Tharu women used to be doing household chores and spend time collecting firewood from the forest. But, their lives have changed now, says Guraule. In the province, paddy cultivation area has also shrunk. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Paddy was cultivated in 1,12,227 hectares of field last year compared to 1,06,380 hectares of land this fiscal year. Compared to other provinces, both paddy production and paddy cultivation area have decreased in Gandaki Province. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">“Shrinking of paddy plantation field due to rise of houses and housing plots has led to drop in paddy produce,” said Basudev Regmi, Chief of Agriculture Development Directorate of the province. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">“Urbanization and commercialization have increased in the arable land and land going barren have also soared, causing the paddy produce to fall,” added Regmi.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Regmi warned that rising tendency to construct houses in the arable land would make country more dependent on food in the days to come. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Adverse weather, shortage of chemical fertilizer, and substandard seeds have also caused the paddy produce to shrink, Regmi described.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Farmers had experienced fertilizer crunch at the time of paddy cultivation. Similarly, heavy rains had damaged the paddy at the time to bear the rice. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Farmer Baikuntha Sapkota of Baglung Municiplaity-3 says that he had harvested just 10 muri of paddy this year compared to 19 muri(traditional way of measurement) last fiscal. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Sapkota complained pests control, shortage of improved seeds and fertilizer management have always remained challenges for farmers. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Paddy productivity, however, has increased in all provinces this year. Productivity has gone up by 1.55 per cent in per hectare of the paddy field this year. Use of improved seeds, and improvement of cultivation have improved productivity, according to Agriculture Knowledge Center Baglung Chief Bhanubhakta Bhattarai.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Bhattarai said paddy produce declined five per cent in Baglung this fiscal year. Bagamti province had produced 5,07,789 metric tons of paddy last year compared to 5,00446 metric tons of the paddy this year.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:20px">Paddy production, nevertheless, increased in remaining five provinces. <br /> Paddy production jumped by the highest rate of 33.33 per cent in Sudurpaschim Province.
